યજ્ઞોપવીત
યજ્ઞોપવીત અથવા જનોઈ કે ઉપનયન (સંસ્કૃત: यज्ञोपवीतम्, उपनयन) હિંદુ ધર્મના સંસ્કારો પૈકીનો દિક્ષા સંસ્કાર છે જેમાં ધારકને ત્રિસૂત્રી આપવામાં આવે છે જે તેને મળનારા જ્ઞાનનાં પ્રતીક સમાન છે.

હિંદુ અને બૌદ્ધ ધર્મમાં જનોઈ સૂતરના પાતળા દોરાઓની બનેલી હોય છે જેને બાળકની અભ્યાસાર્થી ઉંમર અથવા એક અર્થમાં પુખ્તતા દર્શાવવા માટે પહેરવામાં આવે છે.[૧][૨] આ ત્રિસૂત્રીને પ્રાદેશિક વૈવિધ્ય મુજબ અનેક નામોથી ઓળખવામાં આવે છે, જેમકે જનોઈ, જનેઉ, યજ્ઞોપવીત, યોન્ય અને ઝુન્નર.[૩][૪]
યજ્ઞોપવીતની વિધિ (ઉપનયન) કે જેમાં ધારકને જનોઈ પ્રદાન કરવામાં આવે છે તે સામાજીક અને ધાર્મિક રીતે અગત્યનો સંસ્કાર ગણવામાં આવે છે. હિંદુ-બૌદ્ધ સમાજમાં આ સંસ્કાર વિધિ વિવિધ રૂપે થતી જોવા મળે છે અને વિવિધ નામોથી ઓળખાય છે, જેમકે, ઉપનયન, મુંજ, જનેઉ રસમ અને બ્રતબંધ.[૫][૬] હિંદુઓમાં ઉપનયન સંસ્કાર એક સમયે ફક્ત ઉપલા ત્રણ વર્ણો (બ્રાહ્મણ, ક્ષત્રિય અને વૈશ્ય)માં જ થતો, પરંતુ આજકાલ વર્ણભેદ રાખ્યાં વગર ઘણા સંપ્રદયોમાં કિશોરાવસ્થામાં પ્રવેશતા બાળકોને આ સંસ્કાર આપવામાં આવે છે.[૭] ભલે ખૂબ ઓછા પ્રમાણમાં થતું હોય, પરંતુ ક્યારેય બાળકીઓને પણ જનોઈ દેવામાં આવે છે.[૭] આજના સમયમાં ઘણી વખત જનોઈ દેવાની વિધિ લગભગ લગ્ન સંસ્કારના એકદમ પહેલા જ કરવામાં આવે છે, પરંતુ આવા અપવાદો બાદ કરતાં મોટેભાગે તે બાળકની કિશોરાવસ્થામાં જ કરવામાં આવે છે.[૮] બૌદ્ધોમાં જનોઈ દેવાની વિધિ ગમે તે ઉંમરમાં કરી શકાય છે અને તે બાળક-બાળકી બંનેને આપવામાં આવે છે.

જનોઈના સૂત્રો (દોરા) જૂદા-જૂદા સમાજ અને પ્રદેશોમાં જૂદા-જૂદા પ્રતીક સ્વરૂપે દર્શાવવામાં આવે છે. સામાન્ય રીતે જનોઈ દેતી વખતે જનોઈમાં ત્રણ સૂત્રો હોય છે, પરંતુ કેટલીક જ્ઞાતિઓમાં દોરાની સંખ્યા છ હોય છે અને ક્યારેક તો નવ (૯) દોરા વાળી જનોઈ પણ જોવા મળે છે.

જનોઈના ત્રિસૂત્રો ક્યારેક ત્રણ ઋણના પ્રતીકરૂપ ગણાવવામાં આવે છે જેને કદી ભૂલવા ના જોઈએ-
- પોતાના ગુરુનું ઋણ (गुरु ऋण), જનોઈ ધારકને જેણે જ્ઞાન આપ્યું છે તેનું ઋણ
- પોતાના માતા-પિતા અને પિતૃઓનું ઋણ (पितृ ऋण), જનોઈ ધારકને જેણે અસ્તિત્વ પ્રદાન કર્યું છે તેમનું ઋણ
- ઋષિઓ અને વિદ્વાનોનું ઋણ (ऋषि ऋण), એવા લોકોનું ઋણ જેમણે જ્ઞાન (આધ્યાત્મિક અને વ્યવહારૂ)ની પ્રાપ્તિ કરી છે અને જે જ્ઞાન હવે જનોઈ ધારકનું જીવન ઉન્નત કરવાનું છે.
કેટલાંક સંસ્કરણોમાં ઋષિ ઋણને સ્થાને 'દેવ ઋણ' ગણાવવામાં આવે છે. લગ્ન પછી જનોઈ બેવડાઈને છ દોરાની થઈ જાય છે કેમકે હવે માણસ તેની પત્નીના ઋણ પણ પોતાની જવાબદારી માનતો ગણવામાં આવે છે.[૯][૧૦][૧૧]

ત્રણ સૂત્રો ત્રણ દેવીઓના પ્રતીક પણ હોઈ શકે-
- મા ગાયત્રી (गायत्री, મનની દેવી)
- મા સરસ્વતી (सरस्वती, વચન (વાણી)ની દેવી)
- મા સાવિત્રીi (सवित्री, કર્મની દેવી)[૧૨]

સૂત્રો ધારક પાસેથી અપેક્ષિત મન, વચન અને કર્મની શુદ્ધતા/પવિત્રતાના પ્રતીક સમાન પણ માનવામાં આવે છે.

બૌદ્ધ ધર્મમાં જનોઈને ત્રણ રત્નો-ત્રિરત્ન શરણ (त्रिरत्न; ચાઇનીઝ: 三宝, સાન્બાઓ; જાપાનીઝ: 三宝, સાંબો) અને આર્ય અષ્ટાંગ માર્ગમાં સુચવ્યા મુજબના સતત ધ્યાનસ્થ તથા નૈતિક કર્મો સાથે જોડવામાં આવે છે. આ ત્રણ રત્નો છે -
- બુદ્ધ, બોધિસત્વ પ્રાપ્ત કરેલ સર્વોચ્ચ જીવ કે જે સહુકોઈના હૃદયમાં વસે છે
- ધર્મ, એટલે કે બુદ્ધના ઉપદેશો
- સંઘ, બોધિસત્વ પ્રાપ્ત કરેલા અને તેની પ્રાપ્તિ ઝંખતા લોકોનો સમુદાય[૧૩]
