વર્ણન
English: View of a 'shade decked vessel' with a continuous upper deck of light construction and with openings on the sides. These have been boarded up for the passage out to India. The bridge is forward, to assist in navigating congested waterways. She has a single funnel, two masts and a fore-and-aft rigged sail furled against the forward mast. The crew is on board.
  • Subject Notes :SS Vaitarna was a steel screw steamer of 292 tons and was the first ship to be built by the new Grangemouth Dockyard Co. She was equipped with electric light, the first such British ship being launched at Dumbarton two years earlier. Sister ship to Rajapuri. On Thursday 8 November 1888, while sailing from Karachi to Bombay, she sank in a storm somewhere in the Arabian Sea off Porbandar. The loss of life appears to have been heavy and the tragedy became part of Gujarati folklore.
