Insulin : the Garbo of hormones. In 1869, a Berliner medical student, Paul Langerhans, had looked through a microscope at the pancreas (a fragile leaf of tissue tucked under the stomach, and discovered minute islands of cells studded across it. Those were named islets of Langerhans, but their function remained mysterious. Like 20 years later, two dudes, Minkowski and Josef von Mering went on an adventure to remove the pancreas from a puppy in order to identify the function of the organ, and of course, kill the dog ... oh well. Well, the dog didn't die right away, but he was struck by an implacable thirst (like you know, when it's freaking summer and feel like bubble tea and no one offers you anything) and began to urinate on the floor.

Mering and Minkowski were mystified, but the clue emerged two days later when the assistant said that the lab was buzzing with flies (probably you know, because of the ehm ...) and the thing became sticky on the floor. When the urine was tested, both the urine and the dogs blood were overflowing with sugar. yes; sugar.

...bla bla bla, they relaized that pancreas regulates sugar, and it is probably linked to diabetes. so ...
