ગાંધાર હાલનાં ઉત્તર પૂર્વ પાકિસ્તાન અને અફઘાનિસ્તાન પાસે આવેલો પ્રદેશનું પ્રાચીન નામ છે.[૧][૨][૩]

તે વેદિક સંસ્કૃતિનું એક કેન્દ્ર હતું.[૪] ઋગવેદના સમયથી (ઇ.સ. પૂર્વે ૧૫૦૦-૧૨૦૦),[૫][૬] તેમજ પારસી અવેસ્તામાં તેનો ઉલ્લેખ જોવા મળે છે.[૭]

૬ઠ્ઠી સદીમાં હુણ આક્રમણોથી આ વિસ્તારની પડતી શરુ થઇ અને મહંમદ ગઝનવીના આક્રમણથી ઇ.સ. ૧૦૦૧માં ગાંધાર નામ અદ્રશ્ય થયું.[૮]

મહાભારત કાળમાં ગાંધાર રાજ્યના રાજા મહારાજ સુબલની પુત્રી ગાંધારીના લગ્ન હસ્તિનાપુરના અંધ રાજા ધૃતરાષ્ટ્ર સાથે કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા.
