મહાત્મા ગાંધીની હત્યા[ફેરફાર કરો]
મોહનદાસ કરમચંદ ગાંધીની હત્યા ૩૦ જાન્યુઆરી, ૧૯૪૮ના રોજ મધ્ય નવી દિલ્હીની એક મોટી હવેલી બિરલા હાઉસના પરિસરમાં ૭૮ વર્ષની વયે કરવામાં આવી હતી. તેમના હત્યારાનું નામ નથુરામ ગોડસે હતું જે મહારાષ્ટ્ર, પૂણેના એક હિંદુત્વવાદી કાર્યકર્તા[[૧] એક જમણેરી હિન્દુ અર્ધલશ્કરી સંગઠન રાષ્ટ્રીય સ્વયંસેવક સંઘ (આરએસએસ)[૨] તેમજ હિન્દુ મહાસભાના સભ્ય હતા.[૩][૪][૫][૬]
પ્રત્યક્ષદર્શીઓના જણાવ્યા અનુસાર, સાંજે પાંચ વાગ્યા પછી, ગાંધીજી બિરલા હાઉસની પાછળ તરફ બનાવેલી લોન તરફ જનારી સીડીઓની ટોચ પર પહોંચી ગયા હતા, જ્યાં તેઓ દરરોજ સાંજે બહુ-ધાર્મિક પ્રાર્થના સભાઓનું આયોજન કરતા હતા. ગાંધીજી મંચ તરફ ચાલવા લાગ્યા કે તરત જ ગોડસે ગાંધીના માર્ગની બાજુમાં ઊભેલા ટોળામાંથી બહાર આવ્યો અને પોઈન્ટ બ્લેન્ક રેન્જથી ગાંધીજીની છાતી અને પેટમાં ત્રણ ગોળીઓ ચલાવી.[૭][૮] ગોળી વાગવાથી ગાંધીજી જમીન પર પટકાયા, તેમને બિરલા હાઉસમાં તેમના રૂમમાં પાછા લઈ જવામાં આવ્યા હતા જ્યાંથી થોડા સમય પછી એક પ્રતિનિધિ તેમના મૃત્યુની ઘોષણા કરવા માટે બહાર આવ્યો હતો.[૮][upper-alpha ૧]
ગોડસેને ટોળાના સભ્યોએ પકડી લીધો હતો, જેમાં સૌથી પ્રમુખ દિલ્હીમાં અમેરિકન દૂતાવાસના ઉપ-વાણિજ્ય દૂત (વાઇસ-કોન્સ્યુલ) હરબર્ટ રેઇનર જુનિયર હતા, અને ગોડસેને પોલીસને હવાલે કરવામાં આવ્યો હતો. ગાંધી હત્યાની સુનાવણી મે ૧૯૪૮માં દિલ્હીના ઐતિહાસિક લાલ કિલ્લામાં શરૂ થઈ હતી, જેમાં ગોડસે મુખ્ય પ્રતિવાદી હતો, અને તેના સહયોગી નારાયણ આપ્ટે અને અન્ય છ ને સહ-પ્રતિવાદી માનવામાં આવ્યા હતા. ગોડસે અને આપ્ટેને ૮ નવેમ્બર ૧૯૪૯ના રોજ ફાંસીની સજા સંભળાવવામાં આવી હતી. ગાંધીના બે પુત્રો મણિલાલ ગાંધી અને રામદાસ ગાંધી દ્વારા સજા પરિવર્તન માટેની અરજીઓ કરવામાં આવી હતી. જોકે, ભારતના તત્કાલીન વડા પ્રધાન જવાહરલાલ નહેરુ, નાયબ વડા પ્રધાન વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલ અને ગવર્નર-જનરલ ચક્રવર્તી રાજગોપાલાચારીએ તેમની અરજી નકારી કાઢી હતી.[૯]
ગોડસે અને આપ્ટેને ૧૫ નવેમ્બર ૧૯૪૯ના રોજ અંબાલાની જેલમાં ફાંસી આપવામાં આવી હતી.[૧૦]
હત્યાની તૈયારી[ફેરફાર કરો]
મે ૧૯૪૪માં નથુરામ વિનાયક ગોડસેએ ચાકુથી ગાંધીજીની હત્યા કરવાનો પ્રયાસ કર્યો હતો. તેણે ૧૫ થી ૨૦ યુવાનોના જૂથનું નેતૃત્વ કર્યું હતું, જેઓ પંચગની ખાતે પ્રાર્થના સભા દરમિયાન ગાંધી તરફ દોડી આવ્યા હતા. ગોડસે અને તેના જૂથને ટોળાએ ગાંધીજી સુધી પહોંચતા અટકાવ્યા હતા. ગુનાહિત આરોપોને દબાવવાનો ઇનકાર કરવાની ગાંધીજીની પોતાની નીતિને કારણે તેમને મુક્ત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા.[૧૧]
સપ્ટેમ્બર ૧૯૪૪માં ગોડસેએ ફરી એક અન્ય જૂથનું નેતૃત્વ કર્યું અને ગાંધીજીના સેવાગ્રામથી મુંબઈ જતા માર્ગને અવરોધિત કર્યો. આ વખતે ગોડસેની ખંજર સાથે ધરપકડ કરવામાં આવી હતી અને તેણે ગાંધીજીને જાનથી મારી નાખવાની ધમકીઓ ઉચ્ચારી હતી. ગાંધીજીની વિચારસરણીને કારણે તેમને ફરીથી મુક્ત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા.[૧૧]
સપ્ટેમ્બર ૧૯૪૭ની શરૂઆતમાં, ગાંધીજી દિલ્હી ગયા અને ત્યાં અને પડોશી પ્રાંત પૂર્વ પંજાબમાં ભારત અને પાકિસ્તાનના નવા સ્વતંત્ર રાષ્ટ્રોની રચના દરમિયાન તેમની વચ્ચે મોટા પાયે વસ્તીના અરાજક હસ્તાંતરણથી[૧૨][lower-alpha ૧]થયેલા હિંસક હુલ્લડોને રોકવામાં મદદ કરી.[૧૩]
ગોડસે મુસ્લિમો પ્રત્યેની ગાંધીજીની અહિંસાની ફિલસૂફી સાથે મતભેદ ધરાવતો હતો,[૧૪] જેના કારણે ગોડસે અને તેના સાથીઓ દ્વારા જાન્યુઆરી ૧૯૪૮માં ગાંધીજીની હત્યાની યોજના શરૂ કરવામાં આવી હતી. ભારત અને પાકિસ્તાન વચ્ચે કાશ્મીરને લઈને સશસ્ત્ર વિવાદ ચાલી રહ્યો હતો. બીજી તરફ ગાંધીજીએ વિભાજનની શરત મુજબ ભારત સરકાર દ્વારા પાકિસ્તાનને ચૂકવવાની બાકીની રકમ બાબતે ૧૩ જાન્યુઆરી ૧૯૪૮ના રોજ આમરણાંત ઉપવાસ પર ઉતરીને ભારત સરકાર પર પાકિસ્તાનની ચૂકવણી બહાલ કરવા માટે દબાણ કર્યું. ભારત સરકારે, ગાંધીજીને તાબે થઈને, પોતાનો નિર્ણય પાછો ખેંચી લીધો. ગોડસે અને તેના સાથીઓએ આ ઘટનાક્રમનું અર્થઘટન મહાત્મા ગાંધી દ્વારા સત્તાને નિયંત્રિત કરવા અને ભારતને નુકસાન પહોંચાડવાનો કેસ ગણાવ્યો હતો.[૧૫][૧૬]
જે દિવસે ગાંધીજી ભૂખ હડતાલ પર ઉતર્યા તે દિવસે ગોડસે અને તેના સાથીઓએ ગાંધીજીની હત્યા કેવી રીતે કરવી તેનું આયોજન શરૂ કર્યું હતું.[૧૫][૧૭] નથુરામ વિનાયક ગોડસે અને નારાયણ આપ્ટેએ બેરેટ્ટા એમ૧૯૩૪ પિસ્તોલની ખરીદી કરી હતી. પિસ્તોલ ખરીદવાની સાથે સાથે ગોડસે અને તેના સાથીઓએ ગાંધીજીની હિલચાલ પર નજર રાખી હતી.
