દક્ષિણ ભારતનાં ૪ (ચાર) દક્ષિણભાષી રાજ્યો પૈકીના એક એવા તમિલનાડુ રાજ્યનાં રહેવાસી અથવા તો તમિળ ભાષા બોલનારા લોકોને તમિલીયન તરિકે ઓળખવામાં આવે છે. વળી ઉત્તર શ્રીલંકામાં તથા મલેશીયા, સિંગાપુર, મોરેશિયસ, સાઉથ આફ્રિકા, કેનેડા, યુ.કે. વગેરે દેશોમાં પણ તમિલ લોકો સારા એવા પ્રમાણમાં વસેલા છે. આ માટે કેટલીક વાર મદ્રાસી શબ્દનું પણ પ્રયોજન કરવામાં આવે છે. તેઓ મુખ્યત્વે હિંન્દુ, બુદ્ધ, અને જૈન ધર્મ પાળૅ છે.
