This page is to discuss translations required for Module:Convert which is used to implement Template:Convert. It is helpful for me to have this page as a central location for discussion, so please discuss any issues here, or add a new section.
Information on what is needed to adapt the module is available at the transwiki guide and the translate page that it links to.
Some old notes are at User:Johnuniq/Translation. The information requested there is still needed. You may want to edit that page to add the information, or discuss here.
- Module:Convert • Should not be changed. If a change appears desirable, please discuss first.
- Module:Convert/data • Unit definitions—must not be changed (edit the master list of units instead).
- Module:Convert/text • Text for options and messages—should be changed.
- Module:Convert/documentation/conversion data/doc • Master list of units (to be created).

Convert/text
I have updated the translation_table
. Please check en:Template:Convert/Transwiki guide/translate#Convert/text for more that is needed. You may like to edit the convert/text module, or describe what is needed here.
Category
Enwiki uses two tracking categories to locate errors in converts:
- Category:Convert invalid units =
- Category:Convert invalid options = :
Those pages do not exist here, but they work as categories (they are currently empty). Probably only one category is sufficient. Please add the name that should be used (or add two names if preferred).
- Are you sure you want two categories? They are each empty at the moment, and likely to stay reasonably empty. It may be better to have just one category? It's no problem to me, but I think you should be aware that checking one category might be easier than checking two. If two is wanted, please confirm. If one, please think of a suitable name.
- No ! I only translate both to understand that which one is more useful. I think first one (શ્રેણી:અમાન્ય એકમો બદલો) is batter and more discriptive in gu.lang.
If satisfied with the name of the error tracking category (શ્રેણી:અમાન્ય એકમો બદલો), please create that page. Normally it would be a hidden category.
Ranges
[ફેરફાર કરો]Searching convert/text for "range_types" shows some text where translations are needed. If wanted, edit the module, or add the required text here (add the text on each of the following lines).
- and = અને
- or = અથવા
- by = X (બાય)
- to = થી
- to about = થી આશરે
- The range "by" is used in some articles—see the list of all converts at User:Johnuniq/Translation. There is no use of "to about" (to approximately), but the following shows an example of how it would appear.
{{convert|17|by|22|in|cm}}
→ 17 by 22 inches (43 by 56 cm){{convert|17|to about|22|in|cm}}
→ 17 to about 22 inches (43 to about 56 cm)
- In gujarati, for "by", we use term "X" only (math`s multiply sign). If it`s necessary to write in word, we can use transliteration of "by" = "બાય". (e.g. 7 by 6, ૭ X ૬, ૭ બાય ૬)
- for "to about", sorry to say that I can`t understand perfact use and meaning of this term. If I am right, Its about "from here to approx." and for that term, we can use "થી આશરે". (e.g. 5 to about 8, ૫ થી આશરે ૮)
- The range "by" is used in some articles—see the list of all converts at User:Johnuniq/Translation. There is no use of "to about" (to approximately), but the following shows an example of how it would appear.
The way to think about issues like "by" is "if someone copies an article containing {{convert|5|by|8|m}}
, what should be displayed?". Anything wanted can be displayed. I think you wanted ×
, so that is what I did for now. It's easy to change if something else should be tried. Following are some examples showing the changes I just implemented.
{{convert|5|m}}
→ 5 metres (16 ft){{convert|5|m|disp=or}}
→ 5 metres or 16 feet{{convert|5|m|disp=અથવા}}
→ 5 metres (16 ft)*{{convert|5|and|8|m}}
→ 5 and 8 metres (16 and 26 ft){{convert|5|or|8|m}}
→ 5 or 8 metres (16 or 26 ft){{convert|5|by|8|m}}
→ 5 by 8 metres (16 by 26 ft){{convert|5|to|8|m}}
→ 5 to 8 metres (16 to 26 ft){{convert|5|to about|8|m}}
→ 5 to about 8 metres (16 to about 26 ft){{convert|5|અને|8|m}}
→ 5 અને[convert: unknown unit]{{convert|5|અથવા|8|m}}
→ 5 અથવા[convert: unknown unit]{{convert|5|x|8|m}}
→ 5 by 8 metres (16 ft × 26 ft){{convert|5|થી|8|m}}
→ 5 થી[convert: unknown unit]
Let me know if this is ok, or if something should be changed.
- It`s Perfect ! No need to change anything.
Error messages
[ફેરફાર કરો]Searching convert/text for "all_messages" shows the error messages which need translation. See en:Help:Convert messages for examples of how the error messages appear. I suggest leaving the "Anchor" text until later, however, the "Mouseover title text" and "Link text" needs translation. Also, the cvt_format text needs to be fixed. How do you want to handle this? You can either edit the module or post translations here.

Good, I have added that (you might check the diff). Following are some error messages to demonstrate (hover the mouse over each message to see more detail):
{{convert|xyz|m}}
→ [convert: invalid number]{{convert|1|bogus}}
→ 1 bogus[convert: unknown unit]{{convert|1|mpg}}
→ 1 mpg[convert: ambiguous unit]
The pop-up text that appears when the mouse is held over the last message is in Module:Convert/data (search for "shouldbe"). Later I will provide a master list of units that is used to generate convert/data. Meanwhile, please avoid making many edits to that module because I need to keep the master list (on my computer at the moment) up to date. If you would like to list any shouldbe text that you would like translated, I will do that. Such errors may never be seen, but we may as well get them right.
The red link in the error messages need to be fixed. There are two ways to do that. The fastest is to insert ":en:" in the link; an error would then link to the correct section at en:Help:Convert messages. The proper way to fix it would be to copy that page from enwiki and translate each message. If you do that, the name of the page can be used for the link. To start, perhaps you would like to copy the enwiki page to a suitable title; then translations can be done at any time. Tell me what is wanted.
Finally, the "convert:" at the start of the message should be translated. Searching for that (including the colon in the search) at Module:Convert/text finds what text needs to be translated. You might like to do that edit, or tell me what it should be.
Indian Numbering System

- It's easy to add this, but we should first think about the effect. Using engineering notation with units is rare and is meant to cover something like the following (which is fixed text from enwiki):
- You may want to keep the en values so any convert copied from enwiki will work. On the other hand, there may not be articles here using this feature, so it does not matter. At any rate, a decision is needed about whether to keep or whether to remove the en values.
- The next issue is to consider whether it is likely that a unit with e5 or e7 or e11 would be added. If an article used
{{convert|1.23|e6m}}
, should an editor replace it with{{convert|12.3|e5m}}
(and possibly replace the 12.3 with gu digits)? If the answer is "yes", then the new entries should be added. What do you think? (IST)- It is important to use the Indian Numbering System in Gujarati, because million, billion and trillion are not conventional numbers in India not at all in Gujarat. I don't see any point in literally transliterating those words from English to Gujarati. I see a light at the end of tunnel in the last option provided by yourself. We will have to document this somewhere in module documentation for the users to convert e values while importing content from English.
- Is there a possibility to have it like below in module? I think it should be, and if it is, then it solves our problem, if a user converts e values, module would display Gujarati or INS units, if not, English values transliterated in Gujarati.--ધવલચર્ચા/યોગદાન ૧૬:૧૨, ૫ એપ્રિલ ૨૦૧૪ (IST)
- ["3"] = { "હજાર", exponent = 3 },
- ["5"] = { "લાખ", link = "100000 (number)", exponent = 5 },
- ["6"] = { "મિલિયન", exponent = 6 },
- ["7"] = { "કરોડ", link = "10000000 (number)", exponent = 7 },

- ["15"] = { "ક્વોડ્રિલિયન", link = "1000000000000000 (number)", exponent = 15 }
- That's fine. I have done that. Some examples:
{{convert|1.23|e5m|e7ft}}
→ 1.23 e5m[convert: unknown unit]{{convert|0.123|e6m|e7ft}}
→ 0.123 million metres ([convert: unknown unit]){{convert|12.3|e11m|e7ft}}
→ 12.3 e11m[convert: unknown unit]
- These kind of units are very rarely used, so I don't think it is worthwhile worrying about documentation at this stage. Let's get the commonly used features fixed first—do you have anything to add to the unit names or SI prefixes at User:Johnuniq/Translation. By the way, I have put a list of links on my user page which is handy to find the related pages.
