પોરબંદર સ્ટોન

પોરબંદર સ્ટોન અથવા પોરબંદરી પથ્થર એ ભારતના ગુજરાત રાજ્યના સૌરાષ્ટ્ર ક્ષેત્રના પોરબંદરના કાર્બોનેટ ખડકોમાં મળી આવેલા મિલિઓલાઈટ ચૂનાના ખડકો (લાઈમસ્ટોન) છે.^[૧] ^[૨] બ્રિટીશ રાજ દરમ્યાન, બોમ્બે (હાલ મુંબઈ) ની ઘણી જાહેર ઇમારતોના બાંધકામમાં આ પથ્થરનો મોટા પ્રમાણમાં ઉપયોગ થતો હતો, જેમાં કે વિક્ટોરિયા ટર્મિનસ, નેસેટ ઇલિયાહૂ સિનેગૉગ, બોમ્બે હાઈકોર્ટ અને ક્રોફોર્ડ માર્કેટ ઈત્યાદિ સમાવેશ થાય છે.^[૩]^[૪]^[૫]

આ પથ્થરનું નામ પોરબંદર શહેરથી આવ્યું છે જ્યાંથી તેને મુંબઈ અને અન્ય શહેરોમાં મોકલવામાં આવતા હતા. તેનો અર્થ એ નથી કે આ પથ્થર પોરબંદર શહેરમાંથી નીકળતા હતા; એવા પણ દાખલા છે કે અસલ પોરબંદર સ્ટોન કરતા નીચી કક્ષાના આ શહેરના પથ્થરોને અસલ 'પોરબંદર પથ્થર' તરીકે ઓળખાવી પધરાવી દેવામાં આવતા.^[૬] મુંબઈ ઉપરાંત, મદ્રાસ અને કોચીનની અગ્રણી ઇમારતોમાં પણ આ પત્થર દેખાય છે.^[૭] શિલ્પકારો અને આર્કિટેક્ટ્સ દ્વારા આ પથ્થરને ખૂબ કિંમતી બનાવવામાં આવ્યો હતો, અને ૧૯૧૭-૧૮ દરમિયાન લગભગ ૩૨,૪૨૦ ટન રાજ્યની બહાર કલકત્તા, મદ્રાસ, કરાંચી અને રંગૂન મોકલવામાં આવ્યો હતો.^[૮]
