જળ કાગડો કે મોટો કાજિયો (અંગ્રેજી: Great Cormorant, Large Cormorant (ભારત), Great Black Cormorant (ઉત્તર ગોળાર્ધમાં), Black Cormorant (ઓસ્ટ્રેલિયા), Black Shag (ન્યુઝીલેન્ડ). હીન્દી: પાણકૌવા, જલકૌવા, ઘોગુર, સંસ્કૃત: મહા જલકાક) (Phalacrocorax carbo) એ જળપક્ષીઓનાં કાજિયા કુટુંબનું બહુપ્રમાણમાં ફેલાયેલું, લગભગ બધે જ જોવા મળતું, પક્ષી છે.[૨]
વર્ણન
[ફેરફાર કરો]આ ઘણું મોટું કાળું પક્ષી છે, પણ તેનો વ્યાપ બહુ હોય, વિસ્તાર પ્રમાણે કદમાં વિવિધતા પણ ઘણી છે. તેનું વજન ૧.૫ કિ.ગ્રા.[૩] થી ૫.૩ કિ.ગ્રા.[૪] સુધી, મહદાંશે ૨.૬ કિ.ગ્રા. થી ૩.૭ કિ.ગ્રા. વચ્ચે[૫] હોય છે. લંબાઈ ૭૦ સે.મી.થી ૧૦૨ સે.મી. (૨૦-૪૦ ઈંચ) અને પાંખોનો વ્યાપ ૧૨૧ થી ૧૬૦ સે.મી. (૪૮-૬૩ ઈંચ) હોય છે.[૬][૭] તેને લાંબી પૂંછડી અને ગળા પર પીળા ડાઘા હોય છે. પુખ્તોને પ્રજોપ્તિકાળમાં જાંઘના ભાગે સફેદ ડાઘા હોય છે.
આ પક્ષી મોટાભાગે મૌન રહે છે પણ તેમની સંવનન વસાહતમાં કંઠસ્થાનીય, ગળામાંથી ગરગરાટ જેવો, અવાજ સાંભળવા મળે છે.
